A Bread Mold Science Experiment
For Grade School Children

Science does not need to be boring and here is one bread mold science experiment that is fun and easy to conduct at school, in your home or even for a science fair.

Before you begin this bread mold science experiment you will need to gather the following supplies:  4 different kinds of bread, water, an air tight covering material like plastic wrap and a magnifying glass.  Be sure to allow 1 to 2 weeks to conduct the experiment.

This is the procedure to follow in the next step of the bread mold science experiment:  For the first sample you will take a piece of bread and cut it in half.  The bread should not be stale but it can be a few days old.  Leave one half of the bread in the open air and seal the other piece in the plastic wrap.

The second sample should also be cut in half.  Place one half of the bread in the sunlight and put the other piece of bread in a paper bag or other place that is dark.

The third sample slice of bread will be cut in half like the previous two.  One half needs to be kept very dry and the other half should have 1 teaspoon of water put on it.  This piece should also be spritzed with a few drops of water each day.

The fourth bread slice will be cut in half, too.  Place one half of the slice somewhere that is warm and dark and the other half needs to be in a place that is cold and dark like the refrigerator.

Each day the samples should be examined with the naked eye and also with a magnifying glass.  It won’t be long before the children notice changes in at least some of the bread slices.

If you are doing this bread mold science experiment in your home or at school you can ask the following questions:  What is the best place to store bread if you do not want the mold to grow?  How should the bread be stored to avoid mold?  What other foods may grow mold if left exposed?

This bread mold science experiment can be developed into a science fair project by following the steps to scientific method.  You could take the bread mold experiment a step further and determine which foods mold the easiest and best.

A bread mold experiment is a great way to get kids interested in science.
