7th Grade Science Project Ideas

The world is full of potential ideas for 7th grade science project ideas.  From the fundamentals of electricity and magnetism, to the features of local geology, finding the perfect 7th grade science project ideas is as simple as keeping your eyes open to the world around you and noting how everyday objects and ideas utilize scientific principles.

Electricity is a fascinating phenomenon that is absolutely essential to the existence of modern society.  A note of caution is in order--experiments with electricity are by their very nature dangerous, and no 7th grade science project ideas should utilize high voltages and currents such as those present in home electrical plug ins.  Rather, small batteries should be used instead.  Even still, batteries can be dangerous and most are composed of poisonous and caustic chemicals, so adult supervision is required.

The seventh grade is the perfect age to start teaching about circuit concepts.  Using a nine volt battery, a few lengths of wire, and a small light bulb, you can come up with 7th grade science project ideas that show such fundamental circuit concepts and closed/open circuits, short circuits, etc.

One idea is to show how that all parts of the circuit must be connected to power the light bulb.  If the circuit is interrupted in any one place, the entire circuit fails.  The advanced 7th grade student may seek to explain why this phenomenon occurs, particularly if they are familiar with electrons and electron charge.

Geology is another fascinating field of study that has great potential when researching 7th grade science project ideas.  Consider purchasing a geology guide book or researching local geology on the internet.  The student can then start exploring local rocks and rock formations and attempt to categorize the rocks by type and composition.

The advanced 7th grade student may wish to try to use all of the data collected to uncover details about the geological history of the region.  Are any lava rocks present?  Are there sedimentary rocks with sea life fossils?  These and similar features can indicate if the area was once volcanic or under water.

The possibilities for 7th grade science project ideas are nearly endless.  The concepts of experimentation and analysis are really more important than the subject itself.  This is the perfect age to begin introducing the student to the process of science, not just science facts.
